Sustainability

We love creating beautiful designs and producing top quality fabrics with the health of our planet and workers at the forefront of our business.

We’ve worked hard to source manufacturers who offer both quality and sustainability hand in hand. We’re on a continuous journey to push our eco boundaries, lower our carbon footprint and improve our environmental impact.

The fabrics we are proud to have worked with include:

100% Organic Cottons

With today’s sustainability challenges and the contribution of the fashion and textile industry adding to those challenges, we must collectively rethink production and consumption of textiles. Organic fibres play multifaceted roles in creating an industry that actively lowers its environmental impact and prioritises human health over short term profit.

To build a truly sustainable textile industry, we work with manufacturers who process and produce textiles on the basis of both environmental and social criteria.
This means assessing everything from the chemical inputs being used to the ethical treatment of workers.

Environmental Criteria

Organic fibres are natural fibres grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, insecticides, or herbicides and GMOs (Genetic Modified Organisms) according to the principles of organic agriculture. Organic agriculture is a production process that sustains the health of ecosystems, soils and people. Key points below:

*Separation from conventional fibre products and identification of organic fibre products
*Processing units must demonstrate environment management, including wastewater treatment
*Technical quality parameters for colour fastness and shrinkage for finished goods required
*Restrictions on accessories
*Restrictions on additional fibre materials
*Environmentally hazardous substances prohibited in chemical inputs
*Evaluation of toxicity and biodegradability for chemical inputs

Social Criteria

The Standard requirements concerning working and social conditions that are equivalent to those of leading social sustainability standards. Based on the key norms of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), must be met by all processors, manufacturers and traders. They must have a social compliance management system, with defined elements in place to ensure that the social criteria are met. Key points below:

*Employment is freely chosen
*Freedom of association and collective bargaining
*Child labour shall not be used
*No discrimination is practised
*Occupational health and safety (OHS)
*No harassment and violence
*Remuneration and assessment of living wage gap
*Working time
*No precarious employment is provided
*Migrant workers

LENZING™ ECOVERO™

LENZING™ ECOVERO™ is derived from certified renewable wood sources using an eco-responsible production process that meets high environmental standards, resulting in LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers being tailored to a sustainable lifestyle, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Thanks to these eco-responsible production practices, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ has a much lower environmental impact than generic viscose, as confirmed by the Higg MSI*, leaving air and water cleaner. LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibers are certified with the EU Ecolabel.

In a world of finite natural resources, environmental sustainability requires that less is taken – using only the resources needed, and utilizing them with maximum efficiency. As compared with generic viscose, the production of LENZING™ ECOVERO™ has a substantially smaller environmental footprint.

When it is needed to take from nature, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ seeks to give back responsibly, including water. Furthermore, being cellulosic materials, LENZING™ ECOVERO™  fibers are biodegradable and naturally return to nature after disposal, as certified by TÜV AUSTRIA for industrial, home, soil, fresh water and marine conditions*. *Tests were done on LENZING™ Viscose standard fibres.

The natural and renewable raw material, wood and pulp, comes from certified and controlled sources derived from sustainably managed forests. The non- profit environmental protection organization Canopy has consistently ranked Lenzing among the top viscose producers worldwide for their sustainable wood and pulp sourcing practices.

LENZING™ ECOVERO™ generates up to 50% lower water impact*. In addition to maintaining a highly efficient usage rate, water used is cleaned before returning
to nature. They also generate up to 50% lower CO2 emissions to air*, helping to combat climate change.

Today’s consumers are increasingly demanding more sustainable fashion choices. In producing eco-responsible viscose fibres, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ follow the maxim “take less, give more”, based on the twin foundations of respect for nature and respect for their customers. They strive to help build a cleaner and greener world by taking less from the environment, maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing waste in the production process to achieve excellent sustainability figures.

*Compared to generic viscose and calculated using the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI) tools provided by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition. The Higg MSI tools assess impacts of materials from cradle-to-gate for a finished materials (e.g. to the point at which the materials are ready to be assembled into a product). However, this figure only shows impacts from cradle to fiber production gate.

100% TENCEL™ Lyocell Fibres

Lyocell is a semi-synthetic textile made up of cellulosic regenerated fibres and uses non-toxic NMMO instead of the highly toxic carbon disulphide.

We have consciously chosen to work with the branded Lyocell fibres called TENCEL™, owned by the Lenzing corporation. The main reason being their commendable reputation for their award winning and environmentally responsible closed loop production process.

TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres are extracted from sustainably grown wood using a unique closed loop system which recovers and reuses the solvents used, minimising the environmental impact of production. Unique physical properties lead to their high tenacity profile, efficient moisture management and gentleness to skin.

As well as the huge environmental benefits, TENCEL™ branded Lyocell fibres are known for their natural comfort and luxurious soft touch. Being made from
sustainably certified beech and eucalyptus tree pulp TENCEL™ Lyocell’s natural fibres make this material breathable, absorbent and hold natural anti-bacterial qualities.

The TENCEL™ Lyocell we work with is certified by Lenzing which means the sustainable quality is guaranteed. LENZING™ and TENCEL™ are trademarks of Lenzing AG.

Packaging Materials

Our eco responsibility of our marketing and packaging materials are just important to us as the fabric itself. We pride ourselves in the following:

*Printed in the UK – lowers our carbon footprint
*100% recycled papers
*Papers made from 100% de-inked waste
*Papers made using 100% post consumer waste
*Reduced water and energy consumption during the printing process
*Polymerised toners from inert ingredients use lower temperatures resulting in less energy consumption
*Recycled and recyclable tissue paper
*Recyclable brown tape
*Recyclable Branded tape
*Recyclable stickers
*Recycled and recyclable marketing paper
*Recycled and recyclable postal boxes
*Biodegradable wrapping – these sheets are derived from vegetable starch which comes from an annually renewable crop. As opposed to fossil fuel derived oil based plastics which are non renewable. They are biodegradable and compostable, breaking down into CO2 and H2O. (at a constant 58°C it takes approx 45 days to decompose.)
